Child Protection Services:
Child Protection Services and law enforcement agencies are required by law to investigate reports of child abuse or neglect. The report is made to the Department of Social Services, law enforcement or the state’s attorney.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP):
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (formerly known as food stamps) helps low-income South Dakotans buy the food they need to stay healthy while they work to regain financial independence. SNAP benefits are not intended to cover all of a person or family’s food costs but will help with purchasing the food needed for a nutritionally adequate diet. The amount of SNAP benefits a person or household receives is based on household size, income and allowable expenses.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF):
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is a temporary public assistance work program administered by the Department of Social Services and the Department of Labor and Regulation. TANF is a needs-based program for families with children under age 18 (or under age 19 if the child is in high school) who need financial support because of:
- a death of a parent,
- a parent is absent from the home, or
- physical or mental incapacity or unemployment of a parent.

Families with serious financial needs may qualify for TANF monthly payments. Your TANF payment is based on who lives with your family, who is eligible in your household, and other income and resources available to your family.
